The Big Picture

Oil is running the show. Crude jumps 6.4% and natural gas adds 4.3%, dragging the energy sector up 4.1% while the broad market drifts. That kind of move in fuel prices is an inflation input, and the bond market noticed. Long Treasuries sold off, with TLT down 0.72% and the inverse TBT up 1.43%, meaning long yields pushed higher. Higher borrowing costs hit small caps hardest: the Russell 2000 is off 0.7%, roughly nine times the S&P 500's 0.08% dip. Silver up 2.4% and gold up 0.39% fit the same story, hard assets bidding against a softer dollar. The tell is crypto. Bitcoin is down 2% and Ethereum 2.6%, so speculative money is stepping back even with the Fear and Greed Index at 64. Greed on the gauge, caution in the tape.
