The Big Picture
Oil set the tone. Crude fell 3.52%, and energy stocks went with it, down 2.88% and worst on the board. That accounts for most of the Dow's 1.15% drop, with financials off 1.62% supplying the rest. Everything else barely moved. The Nasdaq 100 closed up 0.03% and technology added 0.10%, so the selling stayed in two sectors instead of spreading. The odd part is gold: down 0.61%, silver down 0.83%. When stocks fall on a growth scare, metals usually catch a bid. They did not. Long bonds did, with TLT up 0.21%. CNN's Fear and Greed Index reads 26, in Fear, while the S&P 500 lost only 0.44%. Watch whether crude stabilizes here. Energy earnings assumptions get rewritten fast below this level.Fear & Greed Index
