The Big Picture

Energy did the moving today. Natural gas jumped 6.3% and crude oil climbed 2.9%, the two biggest moves on the board, while the four major indices finished within a tenth of a percent of flat. The S&P 500 slipped 0.08%, the Nasdaq 100 was unchanged, and the Dow lagged at -0.32%. Higher energy costs fed straight into the bond market. The 20Y Treasury ETF fell 1.29%, which means long term yields rose, and utilities took the hit at -0.98% since that sector borrows heavily and competes with bond payouts. The dollar index added 0.41%, pushing gold down 0.3% and silver down 0.93%. Crypto ignored all of it. Cardano rose 4.28% and XRP 3.11% while Bitcoin held $84,394. Fear and Greed sits at 36, still Fear. Watch the long end: another leg up in yields breaks the equity calm.
