The Big Picture
Nothing in the broad indices moved today. The S&P 500 finished down 0.01%, about as close to unchanged as a session gets. Underneath, money went to work in energy: XLE gained 1.8%, crude rose 1.36%, and natural gas led the whole board at plus 4.49%. Everything else drifted lower. The Nasdaq 100 and Dow each lost 0.33%, the Russell 2000 shed 0.43%, and healthcare was the worst sector at down 1.35%. Long Treasuries caught a bid, TLT up 0.41%, and utilities rose 0.58%. Silver fell 1.58% while gold held near flat at down 0.13%, so this was not a metals story. CNN's Fear and Greed Index reads 45, in Fear.
