The Big Picture
Oil ran the session. The crude ETF USO jumped 4.32% and energy stocks followed, with the sector up 2.6%. Almost everything else leaned lower. The Dow lost 1.24%, the worst of the big indices, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.52% and the Nasdaq 100 finished flat. Financials did the damage, down 1.32%, and the usual hiding places did not work: healthcare fell 1.11% and utilities 0.72%. Long bonds sold too, with the 20Y Treasury ETF TLT down 0.49%, so long rates pushed higher. Metals gave back ground, gold down 0.65% and silver down 1.26%, and the dollar index barely moved at plus 0.04%. Crypto drifted up, Bitcoin plus 0.35%. The tell is sentiment.
