The Big Picture
Technology did almost all of the work. XLK rose 1.70%, pulling the Nasdaq 100 up 1.27%, while the S&P 500 managed 0.56% and the Dow finished at 0.06%. That gap tells you how narrow the session was: strip out tech and the tape barely moved. Energy went the other way, down 2.05% as crude oil fell 1.41%. Financials slipped 0.25%. Odder is what rose alongside tech: gold up 1.21%, silver up 1.03%, utilities up 0.71%. Those are defensive buys, and they do not usually rise on a day tech leads. The dollar index added 0.25% to 102.19 and long Treasuries went nowhere, TLT down 0.06%. Crypto tracked the risk-on mood, Ethereum up 1.69% and XRP up 2.38%.
